Courses

All courses are tailored to the needs of the student and their level of skill at the time of the course. If you have no experience at all that's no problem, we will work together to help you gain as much knowledge as you need to be able to return home with the skills to work on your own. Most complete beginners take home two or three well finished projects each day. I recommend a two or three day course to start and then return only if you need to. In three days we will cover each of the basic skills of woodturning Spindle Turning, Face Plate Turning, and End Grain Turning

Spindle Turning

This is the oldest of the turning disciplines , it refers to working with wood mounted between centers, I.E. supported at each end. This is usually underestimated in terms of the required skill, and is sometimes neglected for more glamorous work, but it is a good foundation for the rest of your work so we will always start with this disciplines Unless you are already a proficient spindle turner and want to work in other areas to build on your existing skills.

Face Plate Turning

This refers to work screwed or glued to a face plate at one side. Bowls Platters Hollow-Forms and all kinds of Seats and Bases are made this way. But modern turning techniques have made the faceplate a little redundant these days so we will cover the differences between the many different holding methods available. Of which chucks are the most commonly used.

End Grain Turning

This refers to work which requires cutting in to the end grain of timber. Boxes and goblets are the most common items turned this way, but some Bowls and Hollow-forms are made this way to. Again this was done using faceplates and jam-fit chucks, but is now done mostly using Woodturning chucks.
